In
May of 1969, three Atlanta area clergy members
had an idea that would bring together community
and religion. Determined to accommodate
the Atlanta area's ever-growing and diverse
religious communities, the trio of Rev. John H.
Allen, Dr. Samuel W. Williams and Dr. Walter G.
Cook sought to establish Atlanta Interfaith
Broadcasters (AIB) to facilitate access to local
media, specifically |

radio and television, for religious community
outreach and service. Rev. Allen was
installed as the organization's first President
and remained there until his death in 1999.

In the early years and throughout the 1970's,
Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters, Inc's. (AIB's) focus was on the origination and
distribution of public service programs on all
of Atlanta's major television and radio
stations. Notable programming such as
The Sound of Youth and Midnight
Minister were just two of the hundreds of
fine programs developed during this period. |
| |
1980 saw the introduction of cable television to
metropolitan Atlanta and in 1981, AIB was
granted a channel on Cable Atlanta to
provide an opportunity for local religions of
all faiths to air their programs. |
| |
From humble beginnings of 20 hours per week of
programming reaching 3000 homes, AIB's
partnership with cable television allowed for
rapid and sustained growth to today's audience
of over one million homes throughout the
seventeen county Atlanta metro area, with
programming airing 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. These statistics make AIB the
nations largest locally originated religious
cable station and reflect our commitment to
community, which has made AIB synonymous with
quality religious and community programming in
Atlanta. |
|
Anticipating changes driven by the introduction
of digital technology, AIB dedicated its new
state-of-the-art production studio in 1999.
This 1600 square foot facility was designed to
meet today's and tomorrow's needs with such
features as multiple editing suites and an
audio/video production booth. Virtual sets
now allow for the provision of digital
backdrops, making superior productions routine
at AIB. |
